  • Brown sugar fragrance, sweet aroma, flavors of caramel, cinnamon, dark chocolate, nutmeg aftertaste, soft and mellow acidity, sweet aromatics.
  • The uniquely shaped beans will provide much surface area when roasting. Heat application should be balanced. We recommend approaching this somewhat like an African coffee and somewhat like most wet-hulled Sumatran coffees, but hold back heat a little bit. The coffee shines for it’s sweetness and complex spices so a light medium to dark medium roast is where most of those notes will show best. Roasting too dark may diminish the complexity found in this coffee!

About the coffee:

The “longberry” variety (or also Harrar Longberry) is thought to be a natural mutation of Typica and one of the oldest varieties on the planet! The cherries are extremely elongated, as are the seeds inside. Fresh cherries are rinsed, depulped and fermented in water before being fully washed. The parchment is dried to the final target moisture content before storage.

Wahana Estate consists of 500 hectares of land in the town of Sidikalang in Northern Indonesia just West of Lake Toba. Wahana is one of the largest privately owned coffee estates in Indonesia! The estate has a Corporate Social Responsibility program that provides farmers a support centre, workers housing with potable water and sanitary facilities, workers safety and training programs, free healthcare and free education. Child labor and forced labor is strictly forbidden. The program also provides seeds to local farmers along with the training and education to improve their farm management skills.

The local area has ideal locations for quality coffees! With elevations up to 1500 meters above sea level, varieties are grown that have a high quality potential. Full shade is implemented on the farm. By controlling the wet-mill and drying processes, Wahana Estate has better control over the consistency and cup quality of the coffees being delivered. Only fully ripe cherries are delivered with a brix up to 20.

Wahana Estate has achieved Rainforest Alliance Certification (RFA) and practices sustainable agriculture by maintaining a shade canopy, protecting native trees and wildlife, maintaining soil productivity, using organic fertilizers such as composting and managing pest and diseases in an ecologically friendly manner.

Amazing Sumatra

This bean surprised me. My first attempt came out much lighter than I was going for but it turned out to be my favorite roast. A medium roast of it was good as well and shined as espresso. The clean taste of caramel, cinnamon, and nutmeg was a great combination. I love delicious surprises.
