Hacea’s “Roast Approach” began as a blog series to help provide roasters with comprehensive background information before jumping into roasting a coffee new to them. As we expanded our library of roasting tutorials, we embarked on creating an education curriculum that allowed us to dive deeper into the roasting theory, enriching the coffee roasting experience for the entire coffee community.
Roast Approach Experience
Hacea's Roast Approach Experience brings the core of the Roast Approach blog series into a new educational experience at the comfort of your own roastery. The Roast Approach Experience is open to everyone, from home hobby roasters to experienced professional roasters.
To isolate variables and focus on how different processing is affected by different roast profiles, we have selected a washed, natural and honey processed coffee from the Adorsi Washing Station in Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. Each Tasting Kit will include these three coffees, each roasted with three different profiles for a total of nine roasted samples. The freshly roasted samples will come with a booklet that will guide you through multiple tasting experiences exploring the differences between each of the roasted samples. This is a great opportunity to experience how different processing methods benefit from various roast profiles to impact the expression of florals, acidity, body and sweetness in the cup.

Live online event
This roasting and tasting experience will be followed up by a live online event! Join us on Friday, January 9th at 11am PST where we will discuss our results and take questions from participants. We will email you with an invitation to join this event closer to the event date.

Each Tasting Kit will include:
- 9 x 30g roasted samples (3 unique roast profiles of each washed, natural and black honey processed coffees from the Adorsi washing station in Ethiopia).
- One Third Wave Water sachet for mixing 1 gallon of water for brewing.
- Printed educational material, including each sample’s roast profile to accompany the tasting.
- Each of the following green coffees in the quantity that you select:
- Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha Adorsi Washed
- Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha Adorsi Natural
- Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha Adorsi Premium Black Honey
Key dates:
- Friday, December 19th- The roasted samples for the Tasting Kit will be roasted on December 19th and will be shipped separately from the green coffee. Your green coffee will be shipped to you ahead of the roasted samples.
- Thursday, December 18th - Last day to order your Tasting Kit so that we have enough time to roast the samples for you
- Friday, January 9th- Our live online event will be held on Friday, January 9th at 11am PST. We will email you a link to join ahead of the event.
We will be using our cupping recipe to evaluate and take notes on each of these coffees. We encourage you to use the Third Wave Water sachet provided and cup the coffees to maintain consistency when brewing your samples.
